Specialized Bicycle Recall Because Handlebars Can Break

On April 21, 2009, Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. of Morgan Hill, California, announced a recall of about 14,000 Specialized 2009 model bicycles because the handlebars can break, posing a serious fall hazard.
Specialized Bicycle Components has received two reports of the handlebar breaking during use, one of which caused a rider to suffer head trauma which resulted in unconsciousness and a puncture wound to the arm.
This Specialized bicycle recall involves HL handlebars on the following 2009 Specialized bicycles: Cross Trail Comp, Myka HT Comp, Myka HT Elite, Rockhopper, Rockhopper Comp and Rockhopper Comp 29. The model number of the HL handlebar is ALR-13 NTFOV and is located underneath the right hand grip of the handlebar.
The recalled bicycles were sold nationwide from June 2008 through February 2009 for between $640 and $1,050. Not surprisingly, the handlebars were manufactured in China.

Cannondale Bicycle Recall: 2009 Road Bikes
On March 17, 2009, CPSC and Cannondale Bicycle Corporation of Bethel, Connecticut announced a Cannondale bicycle recall involving about 1,300 bikes. The recalled Cannondale bicycles include the following 2009 models: Six 5 Compact (9RCT5C), Six 5 (9RCT5D), Six 5 Compact (9RCT5C), Six 6 (9RCT6D), Six 6 Triple (9RCT6T), Six Carbon 5 (9RSX5D), Six Carbon 5 Compact (9RSX5C), Six Carbon 6 Compact (9RSX6C).
“Six” is printed on the bicycle’s top tube and “Cannondale” is printed on the down tube. The recall only involves 2009 models.
The recalled Cannondale bicycles fail to meet the federal safety standard for bicycles, according to the CPSC. Spoke protector discs, required on bicycles to prevent the bicycle chain from interfering or suddenly stopping the wheel, are missing from these bicycles. This poses a fall hazard to the rider.
The recalled Cannon bicycles were sold at authorized Cannondale dealers nationwide from October 2008 through February 2009 for between $1,500 and $2,100.
